Monday, December 28, 2009. Waiting for my web guy to update this site and will post current events and conditions until such time when I can upload photos, vid, etc. Both areas are open and Whitegrass is enjoying some wonderful, early season natural snowfall. Yours truly had the rare opportunity to enjoy pre-Christmas, knee+ deep pow-pow after the big storm of 12/18-20/09 deposited 24"-26" of fluffy freshies on our mountains. It's snowing as I type and 14 degrees out with 5-7 total expected. Total natural snowfall this season is approaching the 55" mark. Not a lot of our friends in VA, PA can claim those totals! There is a good selection of lodging available for the upcoming New Years/Gator Bowl (Let's Gooooo, Mountaineers!) weekend with lots of fun activities planned!! For more current events and reports from "on the ground" visit our other blog at canaanvalley.org.
Tuesday March 24, 2009. As the season winds down, one can tend to forget about the fantastic spring skiing that is still available here. Timberline will be open during the next two weekends March 27/28/29 and April 4/5. The April weekend contains all kinds of end-of-season fun headlined by the “Locals Cup”, a really fun race event! Canaan Valley Resort has pulled the plug on the ski season and is looking forward to opening the 18 hole championship golf course. Yours truly will continue his somewhat non biased monologue on a similar report that is accessible from http://www.canaanvalley.org/. As soon as my web guy executes some cool changes, you will be able to read about, view photos and videos of some local activities including (bad) golf, trout fishing, mountain biking, and general events that we enjoy here at the “Top of the Mountain State”! Until then, come on out, work on your tan and enjoy some great spring skiing!!_____________________________________________________________
Friday Evening March 13. I owe an apology to my 21 loyal readers. I am in a condo in Dillon, CO., enjoying some of Summit County’s finest. Lots o’sun and tons of vertical!! Tuesday was spent at Keystone with cold, wind and snow in the morning and bright Rocky sunshine in the afternoon. (20,000’ of vertical skied) Had to go to the highly rated Vail, so we drove over there on Wednesday (20,000 skied). Skied lots of steeps and had the opportunity to check out China Bowl in bright sunshine and 10”-12” of light, dry, fresh pow-pow!! Had an absolute blast at Breckenridge yesterday and had the opportunity to make some turns at 13,000’ above sea level. (more sun, 2”-3” of freshies)!! (25,000’+) Today we endured more bright sunshine and 3”-4” fresh at Beaver Creek (23,000’) !!

Tuesday March 3. Light (cold) snow all day yesterday left a slight coating over everything. 12 degrees was our high yesterday with a reading at the house of 0 this morning. Has warmed to a balmy 3 degrees with bright sunshine! This weekend in the Valley will be fun-packed with great skiing/riding and lots of events for your entertainment! Wild Thing Weekend will be at Canaan Valley Resort with events such as Lollipop Race for the kids, face painting, saucer races, a Boardercross, Airboard race as well as the Infamous Pond Jump (cool vid!!). Timberline will be hosting the 49th Annual WV Governors Cup as well as a Rail Jam (schedule of events)!! Get outside and DO something!!!__________________________________________________________
Monday March 2. Due to me being techno-challenged, some recent posts have not made the trip to the site! Returning from DC last Sunday, we encountered some winter weather in Moorefield, WV in the form of scattered snow flurries. Nothing on the road until Seneca Rocks and, by the time we crested the Allegheny Front at the Pendleton/Randolph County line, it was howling! Took a drift over the hood of the Blazer on my lane in the Valley! From Thursday 2/19 to Wednesday 2/25, we got a total of 12”-14”. That brings the Valleys’ total natural snowfall to 172” for the season!! A brief warming spell over this past weekend ended last night as the bottom dropped out of the thermometer to a whopping 9 degrees this morning with scattered light snow. Was down with the flu all weekend and can only report second hand on the ski conditions. Some granular, solid conditions on Saturday with a warming, softer, springlike surface on Sunday.
We are in the midst of planning for this weekends’ production of the 49th Annual WV Governor’s Cup Races. The longest running ski race in the Southeast will be held at Timberline March 7th and 8th. Giant Slalom on Saturday with the Slalom taking place on Sunday! Many regional “young guns” will compete with some of us “rusty muskets”!! The race department at Timberline always sets some nice venues for this event…challenging, yet finishable! The trick is to finish both runs on both days to qualify for the Cup!!

Wednesday February 25. Just took an official tour of the recently opened Timberline Hotel and Suites and I was pleasantly surprised by this new facility! 20 large units of varying sizes and appointments situated on the slope (15’-20’ from the skiing surface) offer guests real comfort and convenience! Wifi, flat screen TVs, garden-style Jacuzzi tubs, and lots of different sleeping arrangements and more means there is a room for you!!

Friday February 20 (PM). Left the Valley this morning in the midst of a howling snow/wind storm. 11 degrees with 40+ MPH gusts. Tough to measure the amount of snowfall, as there was grass showing between 4’-5’ drifts! Gonna be a good weekend!! Sitting here in a hotel about 6 blocks from the White House in DC and it dawned on me…folks that live in this urban confusion NEED to visit the Canaan Valley/Blackwater Falls area!!! Imagine an entire county with a population of less than 7,000 and only one stoplight!! (More ski resorts than stoplights!) __________________________________________________________
